Common Questions and Dance Floor Tips

    Some Common Questions:

  • Do I need to have experience to take dance lessons?
No. Students with no music or dance background can learn to dance.
Lessons are individually planned to help you reach your goals as soon as possible.

  • Do I need to have a partner to take lessons?
No. During a private lesson, your instructor will be your partner. If you are in one of our group lessons, you will be dancing with other students and rotating partners to give you the experience of dancing with a variety of people.

  • I have "two left feet." Is there any way to correct this?
Not without surgery. Just kidding. Our simple method of showing you the elements of dance and teaching you the rhythm of each dance will quickly help you to know your left from your right foot. There's no limit as to how good you can become.

  • Do I need special clothes or shoes?
Clothing and shoes that are comfortable and allow free movement should be worn. Shoes should have leather or suede soles. Rubber soled shoes stick to the floor hindering your movement and flip-flops and clogs fall off.

  • Am I too young or old to learn?
Students of all ages are welcome at "Puttin' on the Ritz". Most range in age from 12 through 85 years of age. It's never too late or too early to start dancing. In fact, our youngest students at present are 3 & 4 years old.

  • Will it take me a long time to learn?
Everyone learns at a different pace, and each has different goals in mind when they come to the studio. Enrollment in a combination of private lessons, group classes, and practice dances will help you to learn faster than if you just took one class a week with no private lessons or practice dances.

    Basic Dance Floor Tips:

Are you a beginning dancer who keeps getting bumped while dancing around on the dance floor? Have you been dancing for a while, but still have problems avoiding other couples on the dance floor?

Tips from dancers who have been in the trenches.

Dancers who do not travel around the floor very much should dance toward the center of the floor. This includes dancers who may need to go slowly while practicing new steps. The outside of the floor is available for dancers who do move quickly.

Whether doing American or International Style, more stationary steps should be danced at the corners of the floor or towards the center. This includes swivels and the basic box step.

While dancing, leaders should not look directly at the couple you want to avoid, because you will hit them (believe us, you will!). Instead, concentrate on looking at the spaces and you will dance there.

Also, leaders should look where you are going. If you are looking at your partner (no matter how beautiful she is), you cannot see where you are going.
